New Belgium race report
Tonight was the opening race of the New Belgium 4 race cyclocross series. Never having raced a cyclocross event I was not sure what to expect. Someone told me it must be a flat course because it takes place in the field behind the New Belgium brewery. I think he spent too much time in the brewery before saying this. There were short climbs o plenty with a 32-14 single speed. Calling it a field is a stretch, it winds through a large sand trap, up and down a pile of excavation remnants from the building of the brewery, around the edge and through park like landscaping, back up around the pile and back around a construction type road.
Two mens classes were offered, A and B. I entered the B class and made it to the starting line 30 seconds before the start. And there off....The first turn was suprisingly calm for 35 - 40 riders. The beach was next and not as fun as spring break but left you breathing just as hard. Back on the bike and to the wall. A racer just in front slows half way up, could his name be Tom, bam! I hope he has a strong deraileur hanger. With the semi slicks on I soon learned going wide in the corners and keeping momentum worked the best. Good thing I left the heart rate monitor home, how many laps might the race be? Ok, what did the YOUTUBE video say about dismounting for the barriers. Too late, I'll do better next lap. Oh, here's a nice little jump, do all the cyclocross riders think that? This is a race, quit having fun. Douh, another barrier, darn! I'll get you next time @#$%^. Here we are one lap do.., whoa! whatch those slippery corners,...wn. What's the time? Four more of these? Time to do some soul searching. Last lap, I am NOT getting cought, five more minutes you p$%^. Whew, slow it down and get a drink. What a blast! One more week until the next one.
