4:50 Club

Mountain Biking, Fort Collins, Colorado... early :)

I finally broke down and bought an Amoeba headlamp from Jay (FIFO club from Denver). Jay hooked me up with a last minute build last weekend and even met me at Johnson's corner to deliver the goods so I could ride Tuesday morning.

The light is very nice and comparable in brightness and beam to my old Niterider HID lamp. The nice part is the lamp and battery weigh about as much as the old headlamp was by itself. You can set it up with the battery attached to the top of the helmet for "no-wires" mode or else there is an extension cable that allows you to stuff the battery in your pack or jacket. At $200, the Amoeba is a great deal compared to the $400+ options for new lights from Niterider.

One word of caution......don't look where the light is pointing as you turn it on. Unlike the HID lights that gradually get brighter, the Amoeba is instant on and will test your pupil dilation speed.

Here are some photos from todays FIFO ride down in Denver - http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=474974

Did the 4:50 Club make it out? (minus Doug I am guessing)

Thanks very much for the write up on the Amoeba Doug. Looks great!

I've ridden about 10 hours with my new light and continue to be happy. It is nice to not have a bulky battery pack or power cord running into my jacket or pack. The battery and lamp mounted on the helmet seem to be pretty balanced. Although the battery is probably a bit heavier than the lamp, it is not noticeable. You can buy one of these by sending Jay an email at: jbuthman@gmail.com

Here are some details on the system I bought:

2x Cree Q5 WC LED's (spot beam pattern)
~450 lumens total output
regulated at 800ma. Single mode – on/off
anodized aluminum housing (matte silver, bright silver, or dark bronze)
Optical grade Lexan front cover, rubber switch cover, Trail Tech connectors, waterproof cable
easily mounts with VELCRO
7.4V 2600mAh rechargeable Li-Ion Battery w/ 1.5 amp smart fast charger
Trail Tech straight jumper cable (for running battery in Camelbak vs helmet mounting)
~3 hours runtime - ~3 hour charge time with a total weight of 159 grams
